Midday open thread: Happy Birthday, CSPAN, fires, news, and flooding

Today’s comic by Jen Sorensen is Jacinda of New Zealand vs. Trump:

Happy Birthday, CSPAN!

On March 19, 1979, the cable television industry started C-SPAN as a public service providing unfiltered, unbiased coverage of Congress and the nation’s politics. Forty years later we continue to be your unfiltered view of government. #cspan40 pic.twitter.com/F6TfEiOTrs

Yikes:

A large fire at a Houston-area petrochemicals terminal will likely burn for another two days, authorities said Monday, noting that air quality around the facility was testing within normal guidelines. […]

The company said the fire spread to seven storage tanks holding components of gasoline and also used in nail polish remover, glues and paint thinner. ITC initially said the fire had spread to eight tanks, but company official David Wascome scaled back the number Monday, saying one of the tanks was empty.

This is new news to Facebook? Where has it been?

Facebook’s effort to establish a service that provides its users with local news and information is being hindered by the lack of outlets where the company’s technicians can find original reporting.

The service, launched last year, is currently available in some 400 cities in the United States. But the social media giant said it has found that 40 percent of Americans live in places where there weren’t enough local news stories to support it.

The flooding continues:

Cities across the Midwest are expected to see more rising water this week, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said. There will be some showers from Iowa to Mississippi, but they won’t impact the flooding, Guy said. Meanwhile, rivers will continue to crest this week and next, with cities including Omaha heavily impacted by cresting, Guy said. A crest is the highest point of a flood wave.

On today’s Kagro in the Morning show: There’s a white nationalist gunman inside a Virginia high school! Oh, wait. He’s the School Resource Officer. Ian Reifowitz’s new book, The Tribalization of Politics, how it paved the way to Trump (and… white nationalism). ZOMG, Trump & Deutsche bank.
