Pelosi Caves to Trump and McConnell: House Will Pass Clean Senate Bill on Emergency Border Crisis Funding

Just hours after vowing to make changes to the Senate bill, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced the House would vote on a clean emergency Senate bill passed Wednesday by an 84-8 bi-partisan vote that funds border crisis humanitarian needs. Pelosi issued a statement saying she was caving because “the children come first.”

President Trump last weekend gave Pelosi two weeks to reform asylum laws in exchange for postponing immigration raids targeting those who had ignored deportation orders. That has not happened, but it did provide the pressure needed to pass stalled emergency border funding requested by Trump. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was able to get a broad consensus bill passed after the Senate rejected a previous bill passed by the House. Pelosi had faced a revolt between moderates in support of and progressives opposed to the Senate bill.

Text of Pelosi’s statement:

Dear Colleague on Our Continuing Fight for the Children
JUNE 27, 2019

Dear Democratic Colleague,

It is my belief that our country is at a moment of truth in acting upon our values with the policies we present. I am proud of the work of our Appropriations Committee in the House in passing a bill that received overwhelming Democratic support on Tuesday.

The current situation on the border is shameful and does not reflect our values. We don’t need anyone, especially the U.S. Senate, to tell us what the needs are at the border. Our Members are very well-versed and excellent representatives of the regions that are affected. But we want to find a path to improve the conditions under which we are addressing and ministering to the needs of children and families there.

We are gravely disappointed in the actions taken by the Senate in opposing regular order of Congress.

We will continue to fight for our values and priorities in our legislation and beyond. Our strongest ally in getting a better policy than that which was passed by the Republican Senate is public opinion. The American people constantly question, “Why aren’t we doing a better job to respect the dignity and worth of the children, the children, the children?”

The children come first. At the end of the day, we have to make sure that the resources needed to protect the children are available. Therefore, we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities. In order to get resources to the children fastest, we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill.

As we pass the Senate bill, we will do so with a Battle Cry as to how we go forward to protect children in a way that truly honors their dignity and worth.

Thank you for your continued leadership to protect families, honor our values and keep America safe.

Thursday morning a defiant Pelosi vowed to change the Senate bill, “When anyone asks me what the three most important issues facing the Congress, I always give the same answer: -The children -The children -The children
We have a duty to do right by the children on the border & make necessary changes to the Senate’s border supplemental.”

RNC spokeswoman Elizabeth Harrington celebrated Pelosi’s humiliating cave:
